Maria Sakkari reached the second round of the Wuhan Open with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Donna Vekic. The match had nine breaks in 18 games, and Vekic held only three of her nine service games. Vekic went ahead with an early break in both sets. In the first, she broke for 2-1, and Sakkari didn't level until she broke in game 8 for 4-4. She broke again in game 10 to take the set. Vekic broke in the opening game of the second set, but Sakkari broke straight back. She broke three more times in that set, and the last of those ended the match.
