Elena Gabriela Ruse vs Lilli Tagger — R128 — China Open

Elena Gabriela Ruse reached the second round of the China Open in Beijing, breaking 18-year-old Austrian Lilli Tagger five times in a straight-sets win. The betting market had made Tagger, at WTA No. 59, the narrowest of favorites over the 66th-ranked Romanian. All of Tagger's break points came in the first set. She broke back twice in that set, the second time for 4-4. Ruse broke again in game 9 for 5-4 and took the set. In the second set she broke in games 3 and 5 for a 4-1 lead. Across the match, she won 15 of the 20 points played on Tagger's second serve. Ruse came to Beijing after reaching the quarterfinals of the Korea Open. Tagger began the season ranked 154th and won the Prague Open in July. She has now lost four of her five hard-court matches since then.
