Four hours and five minutes of holding serve nearly slipped away from the favorite, but Arthur Rinderknech banked both opening tiebreaks 7-6(4) and never had to chase. The margin was the return game: Oliver Tarvet, the WTA — ATP No. 349 ranked 321 spots below his opponent, converted the only break that mattered to steal the third set 6-4, but Rinderknech went 0 of 6 on break points all match and still found the one he needed, breaking in game 12 of the fourth to close it 7-5.
