Arthur Rinderknech vs Brandon Nakashima — R16 — Canadian Open

The second serve decided a match that otherwise refused to separate. Rinderknech won 80 percent of his first-serve points and struck 17 aces, but Nakashima claimed 23 of 40 second-serve return points and held 55 percent behind his own second ball against the No. 23 seed's 42. The break came in game 11 of the third, for 6-5. Rinderknech out-hit him 47 winners to 36 and converted three of five break points to Nakashima's three of nine, and still walked off having won one more point across the 221 played, 111 to 110. Four hours and 38 minutes between two men with no prior meetings on record, which is a strange way to spend a week that opened with Nakashima conceding three games to Daniel Altmaier. He gets Luciano Darderi, the No. 23, in the quarterfinals.
