Tatiana Prozorova lost the opening set and still won her Singapore Tennis Open opener, beating Sofia Costoulas in three sets over 2 hours and 51 minutes in the round of 32. Costoulas, the 21-year-old Belgian ranked WTA No. 150 at match time, had the better of the early serving. Four of her five aces came in the first set, where she won 73% of her first-serve points to Prozorova's 57%, and she broke in game 11 before closing out the set 7-5. The second followed similar lines, Costoulas breaking in game 3 and Prozorova breaking back in game 8 to level at 4-4, until Prozorova took the tiebreak for 7-6(2). The decider was more one-sided. Prozorova broke in the opening game and again in game 7 for 5-2, won 83% of her first-serve points in the set and faced no break point in it. Costoulas saved one match point. Across the match Prozorova won 61% of her second-serve points to Costoulas's 47%, and Costoulas finished with five double faults. Prozorova, 22 and ranked WTA No. 165 coming in, was a modest favorite with the betting market at 59%. Her peak this season is WTA No. 156; Costoulas has been as high as WTA No. 134 this season and reached the quarterfinals at January's ASB Classic. The two had no prior meetings on record.
