Fifteenth seed Jasmine Paolini reached the Wuhan Open second round with a 6-3, 6-4 win over WTA No. 29 Sara Bejlek. Serving gave neither player much of an edge. There were 10 breaks in 19 games, and Paolini held only six of her 10 service games. She won more often on return, breaking Bejlek six times in nine return games. Paolini broke in games 2, 4 and 6 of the opening set to lead 5-1. Bejlek's two breaks only narrowed that gap. Paolini also hit six double faults in the set. Bejlek went up 3-1 in the second set with a break in game 4. Paolini broke straight back, then broke again in game 7 for 4-3. Bejlek broke back immediately, but Paolini took her serve a third time in game 9 for 5-4. Bejlek saved one match point before Paolini served out the win after 1 hour 41 minutes. Paolini, ranked WTA No. 20, plays Nikola Bartunkova, ranked 34th, in the next round.
