SummaryFlowPredictStatsTalk

Qualifier Mary Stoiana knocked the seventh seed out of the Japan Women's Open in the round of 32. She beat Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-2, 6-3 in 80 minutes. Oliynykova never held serve: Stoiana broke her in all nine of her service games. On rankings alone the result looks like an upset, since Stoiana is WTA No. 114 and Oliynykova is No. 51. The betting market saw it the other way and made Stoiana a 67 percent favorite. Stoiana played four seasons of college tennis at Texas A&M, and she has built her game around her return more than her serve. She came to this event off a quarterfinal run at the SP Open in September. Servers struggled throughout. Fourteen of the 17 games ended in a break. Stoiana held only three times, and Oliynykova took all five of her break points. Each time she broke, though, she lost her next service game. She won 43 percent of her first-serve points and 27 percent behind her second serve, and she hit six double faults. Oliynykova did hold off plenty of pressure. She saved 11 of the 20 break points she faced, including two match points. In the second set Stoiana needed 13 chances to get her five breaks. Stoiana hit no aces in the match, but she never needed much from her serve.
