In the third set Mensik won 90 percent of his first-serve points and was never broken; in the fourth that number fell to 58, and Tien broke in game 7 for 3-4, his first pass through that serve since the opening game of the second. The rest was attrition. Mensik struck 23 aces to four, won 80 percent of his first-serve points to Tien's 65, and took more of the match's points, 155 to 149, but 57 unforced errors sank him, 10 of them in a fifth set where the 20-year-old left-hander — who reroutes pace rather than supplying it — made three. The Czech saved one match point before the end arrived 3 hours 24 minutes in; Tien, who had not dropped a set through two rounds at the US Open, is into the round of 16.
