·500·HardTaylor Townsend defeated Tatjana Maria 6(0)-7(7), 6-3, 6-2 — Guadalajara Open 2026 R32.
Tatjana Maria and Taylor Townsend: Taylor Townsend leads 2–0 across 2 recorded meetings.
Taylor Townsend lost the opening set in a tiebreak and won the next two to beat Tatjana Maria in the round of 32 at the Guadalajara Open, the WTA 500 event in Mexico. The 30-year-old American, ranked WTA No. 96 at match time, entered on a wild card and needed 2 hours and 15 minutes to get through her first match of the week. The first set belonged to Maria, though not comfortably. The 39-year-old German broke in the opening game and held that advantage until Townsend broke back in game 10 for 5-5, and Maria then took the tiebreak. Townsend's return shaped the last two sets. She broke to open the second, and after Maria levelled at 2-2, broke again in game 5 and in game 9 to take the set. In the third she broke for 3-1 in game 4. Across the match she converted five of 13 break points and won 36 percent of her return games to Maria's 14, dropping serve twice in 14 service games. Maria, ranked WTA No. 83 at match time, had won two of her previous six matches on record, among them a US Open win over Jelena Ostapenko. Townsend reached the fourth round at that tournament before Aryna Sabalenka beat her in straight sets. Townsend now leads their meetings on record 2-0, after winning at the Washington Open last year.
