Jones took it on return, winning 14 of 19 points against the Pole's first serve and breaking in game 7 for 3-4, then again in game 9 for 5-4. The favorite had led after breaks for 2-0 and 4-2; the last four games went to the qualifier, a counterpuncher whose better surface is clay. It is her first main-draw win since the French Open in May, five defeats ago, and her first trip past the opening round at the US Open — she lost her debut there last year.
