Qualifier Maddison Inglis is into the second round of the China Open, the WTA 1000 event in Beijing, after a straight-sets upset of Zeynep Sonmez. Inglis is a 28-year-old Australian ranked 140th. She reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January. Sonmez, a 24-year-old Turkish player at WTA No. 58, went in as the betting market's 66 percent favorite, though she had arrived 10-12 on hard courts this season. Sonmez broke first in both sets, and Inglis recovered each time. In the opener, Sonmez broke in game 3 for a 2-1 lead. Inglis leveled at 3-3 in game 6, added a second break and took the set 6-4. The second set opened with another Sonmez break, but Inglis broke straight back and again in game 4 for 3-1. Sonmez saved five match points in the closing stages and converted three of her four break points overall. Her last break came in game 9 and cut her deficit to 4-5.
