WTA No. 67 Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland reached the second round of the China Open with a straight-sets win over lucky loser Elvina Kalieva, a 23-year-old American ranked 117th. Golubic had lost her previous two hard-court matches, and this was her first win on the surface since the Cincinnati Open in August. Serve was broken five times in the first set. Golubic broke for 2-0 and again for 4-2, and Kalieva broke straight back both times. Golubic's third break put her ahead 5-3, and she held to take the set. In the second set, Golubic broke in the first and third games for a 3-0 lead. She won 83 percent of her first-serve points in that set and did not face a break point, completing the win in 1 hour, 27 minutes.
