Maja Chwalinska is the Wuhan Open champion. The 16th seed lost the opening set and then won the next two against Sonay Kartal, completing the win in 2 hours, 44 minutes. The title follows her run to the Roland-Garros final earlier in 2026. Kartal came into the final ranked WTA No. 129. On her way there she beat Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, Elina Svitolina and Jelena Ostapenko. Chwalinska had beaten Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. The betting market favored Chwalinska only narrowly, rating her at 50 percent. Kartal won the first set. She broke three times and won 69 percent of her first-serve points, while Chwalinska won only 40 percent of hers. The second set was full of breaks. Kartal led 2-0, and after Chwalinska went ahead 4-3, Kartal broke back for 4-4. Chwalinska broke again in game 9 for 5-4 and then held to level the match. She converted only three of 13 break points in that set. The third set was much cleaner for Chwalinska. She made three unforced errors to Kartal's 13 and saved all three break points she faced. She broke in games 5 and 7 to lead 5-2. Kartal saved two match points before Chwalinska closed out the title. Across the match, Kartal won 91 points to Chwalinska's 89 and hit 32 winners to Chwalinska's 22, but she also made 34 unforced errors to Chwalinska's 25.
