Fils had also beaten him in the final of the Cincinnati Open in August and has won every meeting between them on record. Tiafoe had reached the US Open semifinals last month and was ranked one spot above Fils, at ATP No. 8. The betting market had nonetheless favored Fils, who won this title in 2024. Fils landed only 53 percent of his first serves but won 20 of 29 points behind his second. He broke for 4-2 in the opening set's sixth game and did not face a break point until the second set, when he saved both of Tiafoe's chances. That set's lone break came in the 11th game, for 6-5, and Fils served out the match. Next for Fils is ATP No. 18 Valentin Vacherot in the quarterfinals.
