Sonay Kartal vs Xinyu Wang — R64 — China Open

Britain's Sonay Kartal reached the third round of the China Open with a straight-sets win over China's Xinyu Wang, the 31st seed. Kartal came in at WTA No. 129, down from WTA No. 68 at the start of the season, while Wang was WTA No. 38. The betting market still made Kartal a marginal favorite. Wang had a first-round bye, so this was her opening match. Wang saved nine of the 14 break points she faced but was still broken in five of her eight service games. Behind her second serve, she won only three of 15 points. Wang broke first, for a 2-1 lead in the opening set, but Kartal broke straight back and again in game 8 for 5-3. Kartal opened the second set with a break. When Wang leveled at 2-2, Kartal broke back in the next game and added another break in game 7 for 5-2. Kartal reached the quarterfinals here last year, beating Mirra Andreeva along the way. Two more wins would take her back to that stage.
