Sonay Kartal, ranked WTA No. 129, reached the Wuhan Open quarterfinals when she beat 15th seed Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-0 in 62 minutes. The betting market had made Paolini, WTA No. 20, only a slight favorite at 53 percent, despite a gap of more than 100 places in the rankings. The two had no prior meetings on record. Paolini had the first break, in game 3, for a 2-1 lead. She did not win another game. Kartal broke straight back and broke again in games 6 and 8 to take the first set. She then broke in every Paolini service game of the second set. Kartal finished with six breaks from nine chances and was broken only once. Paolini lost most of her own service points. She won just seven of 24 first-serve points and five of 16 on her second serve, and she hit four double faults. She made 24 unforced errors to Kartal's eight, with 14 of them in the first set. It continues a strong run in Wuhan for Kartal. She opened against Anhelina Kalinina and then beat Belinda Bencic 6-0, 7-5 in the previous round. Her quarterfinal opponent is Elina Svitolina, WTA No. 7 at the time.
