Anna Bondar, seeded sixth at the Korea Open, lost the opening set of her first match in Seoul before winning 12 of the last 16 games, beating Renata Zarazua 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 32. Zarazua broke three times in the opening set, the last two of them for 5-2 and 6-2, and she broke again to start the second. Bondar broke straight back for 1-1, added another for 3-1 and closed the set with a break at 6-3. She broke for 2-1 and 4-1 in the third, then once more to finish it at 6-1. On second serve, Bondar won 59 percent of her points to Zarazua's 37 percent. Bondar also hit seven aces; Zarazua hit none. Zarazua's first-serve points won fell from 68 percent in the opening set to 44 percent in the third. Neither arrived in form. Bondar, WTA No. 69, came in 7-11 on hard courts this season and had won two of her last six on the surface. The most recent of those was a three-set loss to Madison Keys at the US Open, where Bondar had taken the opening set. Zarazua, WTA No. 91 and as high as No. 71 this season, has now lost five in a row, her last win coming in the Canadian Open first round in early August. They had no prior meetings on record.
