Mia Pohankova, a 17-year-old Slovak wild card, reached the second round of the Wuhan Open after a 6-1, 6-3 win over lucky loser Anna Bondar. The match took 61 minutes. Pohankova started the season at WTA No. 525 and came in at No. 193, while Bondar was No. 64. The ranking gap was large, but the betting market had the match close to even, with Bondar at 50 percent. Pohankova broke Bondar three times in the first set, in games 1, 5 and 7. She hit eight winners in that set, while Bondar hit none. Bondar won only a third of her first-serve points in the opener. The second set was closer on serve. Bondar won 86 percent of her first-serve points, but Pohankova broke in game 2 for a 2-0 lead, and that break decided the set. Bondar had one break point in each set and converted neither. Pohankova held all eight of her service games and converted all four of her break points. Pohankova made more unforced errors than Bondar, 17 to 14. She also hit nearly three times as many winners, 14 to 5, and won 70 percent of points on her second serve. Next for Pohankova is Xiyu Wang, who was ranked No. 85 at the time.
