A set gone in a tiebreak, broken in the opening game of the second and again to start the third, Nikola Bartunkova spent most of this one chasing a lucky loser ranked 305th. Both times she broke straight back. The answers landed in game 6 for 3-3 and game 2 for 1-1, and the 6-foot Czech, an attacker by instinct, broke four times in 17 return games to Shuo Liang En's two. Liang En took the better share of her break chances, two of four, and still lost the points count 119-104 with eight double faults. A break in game 10 for 6-4 ended it, and Bartunkova is into the last eight at the Monterrey Open, her deepest run of the summer hard-court swing.
