Yulia Putintseva vs Mayar Sherif — QF — Iași Open

Volume trumped efficiency. Yulia Putintseva converted 6 of 9 break points to Mayar Sherif's 6 of 14 and still finished two points light on the full ledger, 99 to 101, an upset only by degrees for a market that gave the No. 9 seed just 58% against the WTA No. 109. Sherif broke for 6-5 in game 11 of the decider, was broken straight back serving for the match in game 12, then took the tiebreak in what was the pair's first meeting on record. The 30-year-old Egyptian needed a second match point to close, 3 hours and 8 minutes in, and the reward is a semifinal at the Iași Open.
