Nikoloz Basilashvili, a qualifier ranked ATP No. 145, beat Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6(3), 6-4 in the round of 32 at the Chengdu Open. The betting market had favored Kecmanovic, ranked ATP No. 60, at 66 percent. Neither man lost serve in the opening set, though Basilashvili had the chances: nine break points in that set, none of them converted, before he took the tiebreak. Kecmanovic saved 11 of the 12 break points he faced across the match. The only break came in game 5 of the second set, putting Basilashvili ahead 3-2. Kecmanovic never won a return game across the 92 minutes, while Basilashvili held all ten of his service games and did not face a break point. He won 70 percent of his second-serve points to Kecmanovic's 50 percent, and took 83 of the 152 points played. The 34-year-old Georgian began the season at ATP No. 107 and has slipped since. Kecmanovic had won two of his previous five matches, most recently losing in the first round of the US Open to Denis Shapovalov. The two had no prior meetings on record.
