Rybakina's first serve was the separator, and it arrived a set late. Then the misses stopped. She trimmed 18 unforced errors in the opening set to 10 and 11 across the next two while winning 86 and 87 percent of her first-serve points, against 60 and 54 for Gauff, whose second serve kept the rallies short in the wrong direction. She served for it at 5-3 in the third, was broken in game 9, then broke straight back in game 10 for 6-4 — her fourth break of the day, 2 hours 8 minutes in. It is the second time in a month she has reversed a lost opener against Gauff, and it carries the Australian Open champion into a first US Open final on record.
