Rafael Jodar reached the Shanghai Masters semifinals by recovering from a set down to beat 20th seed Casper Ruud. He has lost the opening set in all four of his matches this week. Before this match he had also trailed by a set against Thiago Agustin Tirante, Jiri Lehecka and Botic Van De Zandschulp. The 20-year-old Spaniard, seeded 12th, started the season ranked 165th. This is his second Masters semifinal of 2026, after the Canadian Open. Ruud won the first set with its only break, in the 10th game. Jodar had four break points in that set and converted none, even though he won 82% of his first-serve points. In the second set the players traded breaks in games 3 and 4. Jodar then broke again in game 9 to lead 5-4 and served out the set to level the match. The deciding set started the same way. Jodar broke for 2-1, Ruud broke straight back, and Jodar broke again for 3-2. Ruud won only 48% of his first-serve points in that set and double-faulted twice. Jodar broke once more in the ninth game to finish the match, after Ruud had saved three match points. Across the match, Jodar won 76% of his first-serve points to Ruud's 61%. He faced 7 break points, while Ruud faced 15. The betting market had made Jodar a narrow favorite.
