Two days after upsetting WTA No. 1 Elena Rybakina, 118th-ranked Alina Charaeva reached the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 China Open with a straight-sets win over Sonay Kartal. Charaeva had lost in the first round at that level in Madrid and Cincinnati earlier this season. The betting market had made Kartal, ranked 129th, a 60 percent favorite. Charaeva broke for 2-1 in the first set. Kartal leveled at 4-4 with her only break of the match, but Charaeva broke again in the next game and won the set. Two more breaks gave her a 3-0 lead in the second. Kartal had five break points in that set and converted none. Overall, Charaeva saved seven of the eight she faced.
