Jelena Ostapenko vs Elise Mertens — R32 — China Open

Thirteenth seed Elise Mertens reached the round of 16 at the China Open with a three-set win over 24th seed Jelena Ostapenko. She came back from an early break down in the deciding set. Mertens won 78% of her first-serve points and never fewer than 77% in a set. Ostapenko's serve was much less consistent. In the opening set she double-faulted five times and won 55% of her first-serve points, while Mertens broke three times and led 5-1. In the second set, Ostapenko won 76% of her first-serve points, didn't double-fault and saved the only break point she faced. She broke Mertens twice to level the match. Ostapenko broke first in the deciding set to lead 2-0. Mertens broke back in game 3 and again for 3-2. Ostapenko double-faulted six times in the set, giving her 11 for the match, and won 53% of her first-serve points. Mertens ended the match after 2 hours 16 minutes with her third break of the set, in game 9.
