Kimberly Birrell claimed the Korea Open title in Seoul, beating fellow Australian Maya Joint 6-4, 6-2 in 76 minutes. The second seed and the fifth-seeded Joint had no prior meetings on record, and the betting market favored Joint at 60%. Joint broke for 2-0 in the opening set, but Birrell broke back in game 3, moved ahead with another break in game 5 and took the set in game 10. Serve changed hands through the second set, where Birrell broke in games 1, 3, 5 and 7 and Joint broke back in games 2 and 6. Joint held three of her nine service games, and Birrell won 67% of her return games to Joint's 38%. Birrell had needed three sets in both the quarterfinal against Katie Volynets and the semifinal against Anna Bondar; Joint's semifinal ended with a retirement by Alina Korneeva. Birrell came in at WTA No. 56, a season best after starting the year at No. 106, and follows Iga Swiatek as Seoul champion.
