Liudmila Samsonova recovered from a set down to beat Marta Kostyuk in the Guadalajara Open quarterfinals, removing the WTA 500's No. 1 seed from the draw in two hours and 29 minutes. The betting market had favored Kostyuk at 74%. Samsonova, the No. 8 seed at WTA No. 50, has now won all three of their meetings on record, each on a hard court. Kostyuk, ranked WTA No. 10, had reached the last eight without playing a match: a bye in the round of 32 and a walkover from Taylor Townsend in the round of 16. Samsonova broke in the opening game of the match, but Kostyuk broke back in game 4 and again in game 10 to take the first set 6-4, winning 88% of her first-serve points in it. Samsonova then broke in the first and third games of the second set and levelled the match. In the decider, Kostyuk broke for 4-2 and Samsonova broke straight back. The eighth seed broke again in game 11 for 6-5 and served out the match. Kostyuk won 14 of 45 points behind her second serve, 31%, against Samsonova's 56%. Both players double-faulted six times. Samsonova moves into the semifinals a day after needing two tiebreaks to get past Kayla Day in the round of 16.
