Alina Korneeva vs Darya Astakhova — R16 — Korea Open

Alina Korneeva is into the Korea Open quarterfinals in Seoul, where she came through three sets against Darya Astakhova in two hours and 15 minutes. Korneeva, 19 and ranked WTA No. 81 after starting the season at No. 210, broke three times in the opening set to take it 6-2. Astakhova, ranked WTA No. 200 and into the last 16 after surviving a deciding-set tiebreak against Magda Linette, answered by breaking in games 6, 8 and 9 to close out the second set 6-3. The deciding set returned to the shape of the first. Korneeva broke in game 2 and again in game 4 for a 4-0 lead, and Astakhova reached break point five times in the set without converting any of them. Across the match Korneeva took six of her 12 break chances, Astakhova three of 10. Korneeva's hard-court results before Seoul included a round of 16 at the Canadian Open in August, where she beat Emma Navarro and Iva Jovic before losing to Coco Gauff, and a first-round exit at the US Open against Madison Keys.
