Fifteen double faults and 57 unforced errors ended the 30th seed's week in the opening round at the US Open. Ostapenko, a 58 percent favorite with the betting market, out-hit her opponent 48 winners to 14 and still won only 74 of the 165 points. Maria took six of her 12 return games, four of those breaks landing in a second set she shut with one more for 6-1, the single-handed slice leaving a power game nothing to swing through. The 39-year-old German came in 3-12 on hard courts this season and moves into the second round having now won both meetings on record against the Latvian.
