Neither player held serve with any regularity: Birrell won five of her 11 service games, Zidansek four of 10, and the two combined for 18 double faults over just under two hours. Total points finished level at 82 apiece. The first set brought six breaks, three apiece. Birrell moved ahead 6-5 and then lost her serve in game 12, and the tiebreak went her way 7-2. Seven more breaks followed in the second set, four of them Birrell's, while Zidansek converted all three break points she earned. Birrell came in with one win in her past five hard-court matches. Zidansek, ranked WTA No. 135 and playing only her second match on record since reaching the Iași Open semifinals in July, saved a match point before Birrell closed out the match.
