Zachary Svajda About

Svajda's long road from San Diego homeschooler to the top 64

Zachary Svajda is the rare American who reached the top 100 without ever fully shedding the "prospect" label. A native of San Diego who picked up the racquet at age two, he was homeschooled and trained under his father Tom, a teaching pro at Pacific Beach Tennis Club — a family-built environment that valued deliberate practice over the junior-tournament circuit. He earned his first ATP point at 15, then won the 2019 USTA Boys' 18s National Championship to claim a US Open wildcard, making the 16-year-old the youngest man in the main draw since Donald Young in 2005. He took that junior title again in 2021, beating Ben Shelton for a second ticket to New York.

At 5-foot-9, Svajda is no power merchant. His game runs on movement, depth, and a willingness to absorb pace and redirect it — a counterpunching baseliner who wins points by extending rallies rather than ending them in three shots. The two-handed backhand is his anchor, and his court coverage lets him hang in exchanges against bigger hitters. The trade-off is the obvious one for his size: against the tour's heaviest serves, the margin for error on his own delivery shrinks.

Where contemporaries like Shelton and Learner Tien rocketed up, Svajda took the long way, grinding through Challenger laps to build his ranking from the ground up. That patience finally cashed in at the French Open, where he reached the fourth round — comfortably the biggest result of his career and the breakthrough that anchored his climb toward a career-high inside the top 64.

Now ranked No. 62, the 23-year-old San Diegan sits where his trajectory always pointed but rarely guaranteed: established on tour, no longer just a name on the American prospect file, with the back half of the 2026 season the proving ground for whether the Roland-Garros run was a ceiling or a floor.
