Sebastian Ofner About

The Styrian who chose tennis at 10 and broke through at 27

Sebastian Ofner comes out of Bruck an der Mur in Styria, where at 10 he had to pick between football and tennis. He took the racquet, banked his first ATP point at 17 in July 2013, turned pro in 2015 and cracked the top 200 in 2017. His main-draw debut came that summer at Wimbledon out of qualifying, where he beat Thomaz Bellucci and upset then-No. 18 Jack Sock in five sets for a third round.

The 1.91-metre right-hander hits a two-handed backhand and belongs on clay, though the profile reads grinder rather than server, as evidenced by 36 percent of return points won on clay across his career against a 75 percent hold rate. Three of his signature wins have gone the distance; the fifth set is where he lives.

The breakthrough arrived late and after damage, with much of 2022 spent competing on painkillers before surgery on his left heel. Then the 2023 French Open: through qualifying, past Maxime Cressy and Sebastian Korda, then 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 over Fabio Fognini for a last 16 that Stefanos Tsitsipas closed out. The top 100 followed in June 2023, then a career-high ATP No. 37 on 8 January 2024 after a Hong Kong semifinal.

No tour title yet, and his two biggest wins by opponent rank both date to 2025: then-No. 13 Tommy Paul at Wimbledon and then-No. 16 Frances Tiafoe in Rome. As of September 2026 he sits at ATP No. 125 on 495 points, 3-7 for the season and 88 places off that high, but still the highest-ranked Austrian man. The year's best hour was a five-set win over Hamad Medjedovic at Wimbledon in June after dropping the opener 1-6, with Hubert Hurkacz ending it two days later.
