Bucharest's qualifying-draw escape artist who topples seeds at the slams

Elena Gabriela Ruse finished her junior career — a run that produced the Grade-1 Canadian Open Junior Championships title and a 2014 Wimbledon girls' semifinal — with no professional ranking at all, then rebuilt from the bottom. In December 2015, Ruse won her first professional singles title at Antalya, beating Ekaterine Gorgodze in the final. The Bucharest native ground out the next half-decade on the ITF clay, winning six singles and eleven doubles titles on the ITF Circuit before the game translated up.

She's a right-hander built for the dirt — aggressive off both wings, comfortable taking the ball early and dictating with the forehand. In 2025 she reached her fourth career WTA final at the Libéma Open, losing to Elise Mertens, and she opened 2026 by pushing seeds in Linz and trading sets with Jelena Ostapenko and Elena Rybakina at the bigger events.
