Camilo Ugo Carabelli About

The Buenos Aires grinder who climbed off the dirt into the top 60

Camilo Ugo Carabelli is a Buenos Aires right-hander forged on the South American clay pipeline, the kind of player whose résumé reads like a map of the Challenger circuit. He turned professional in 2015 and spent the better part of a decade grinding the dirt for ranking points, stacking up a long ledger of Challenger and ITF titles — every one of them on clay — before the tour-level breakthrough finally arrived in his mid-twenties.

The game is built from the back of the court. The backhand is the cleaner wing and the legs are the engine — Ugo Carabelli defends well, extends rallies, and trusts that his court coverage will outlast opponents who can't put him away. It's classic Argentine dirt-craft in the lineage of the players he grew up idolizing: heavy topspin, depth over flash, and a willingness to play the long match. The hard-court numbers have always trailed the clay ones, and grass remains the surface where the formula breaks down.

The defining stage came at the majors. At the 2022 French Open he qualified for his Grand Slam main-draw debut and won a five-set marathon over former top-15 man Aslan Karatsev, his first major-level win. He's since become a regular fixture in the clay-swing draws across Europe and South America — the Argentine and Chilean stops, plus the warm-weather Masters events like Monte Carlo and Madrid, where his patient baseline game travels best.

Now ranked 57, Ugo Carabelli sits at a career-best stretch, established inside the top 60 as one of the steadier names in the Argentine contingent that includes Francisco Cerundolo and Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The next test is proving the clay results can stretch into a fuller, surface-agnostic season.
