Zsombor Piros About

A junior Slam at 17, a Challenger life at 26: Zsombor Piros

Zsombor Piros turned pro in 2016 out of Budapest, where he still lives and where his father, Attila, put a racquet in his hands at four and remains one of his coaches. The junior credentials arrived quickly: No. 3 in the world junior ranking in 2017, the Australian Open boys' title over Israel's Yshai Oliel that January, and the European Junior Championships to close out the age group.

At 1.80 m the Hungarian was never going to live off free points, so the forehand and the return — the two shots the ATP lists as his favourites — do the work, backed by a two-handed backhand and volleys he credits to Hungary's Davis Cup captain Gabor Koves. Hard is his stated preference, though the ranking has been built on the road, week to week, wherever the draws are.

The tour-level ledger is thin, and most of it comes in a Hungary shirt: a 12-5 Davis Cup record that includes a 2021 win over Marin Cilic when the Croat was ranked 30th and a 2023 win over Benjamin Bonzi, with his first ATP Tour main-draw win landing at Umag in 2023. Everything else is Challenger arithmetic — Tampere and Gwangju in 2022, Split in 2023, La Manche in 2024, Ostrava and Tunis in 2025 on a 10-match run without a set dropped — which carried him to a career-high ATP No. 106 on 4 March 2024. The Slam main draw took 13 attempts: he qualified at the 2025 US Open and went out in the first round to Zachary Svajda, then repeated the exit against Mattia Bellucci in 2026.

As of September 2026 he sits at ATP No. 118, up 36 places on a year earlier and 44 on where the season opened, with four Challenger titles banked by July — Lugano over Joel Schwärzler, Madrid in April, Iasi over Titouan Droguet on 79 percent of second-serve points won. The trophies keep coming; the top 100 has not.
