Veronika Erjavec is the standard-bearer of Slovenian women's tennis, a right-hander born in Postojna on the last day of 1999 who reached the Tour by the unfashionable route. She began playing at age five and developed her game through early Slovenian programs, notably at AFTennis, where she worked with coach Aleš Filipčič from 2008 to 2021. She turned pro in 2017 and spent the better part of seven seasons on the ITF and WTA 125 circuits before her ranking caught up to a game that was always Tour-caliber.
She's a clay-first baseliner — her preferred surface is clay — who built her résumé on patience and return pressure rather than a fast-track junior pedigree, though the junior signal was there: she won a bronze medal for Slovenia at the 2018 Mediterranean Games in Tarragona, beating Italy's Lucia Bronzetti in the medal match. The dirt is where her breakthroughs landed too — in April 2023 she won her first singles tournament in Osijek, Croatia.
The ascent steepened in 2025. Erjavec won her first WTA 125 singles title at the Changsha Open over Maria Timofeeva, then made it back-to-back the following week by beating Alina Charaeva in the Huzhou final, reaching a new career high of No. 99 on 16 September 2025. That season she also made her Tour-level and Grand Slam main-draw debut at the Australian Open, and notched her first Grand Slam main-draw win at Wimbledon, defeating No. 26 Marta Kostyuk for her career-best win by ranking. The current beat is consolidation inside the top 100. She holds a career-high singles ranking of No. 91, achieved on 16 March 2026, and at 26 she's pressing to convert 125-level dominance into Tour-level results — with the clay swing through Roland-Garros the natural stage for it.
