Tomas Martin Etcheverry About

The La Plata giant who carried Argentina back to the front

A 6-foot-5 right-hander from La Plata, Tomas Martin Etcheverry is the son of two family-court lawyers who started on a racquet at five and turned pro in 2017. He built his career on the ITF and ATP Challenger circuits, winning multiple Challenger titles that propelled him into the top 100 by April 2022. Under longtime coach Horacio de la Peña, the slow climb up the South American dirt produced exactly the baseliner you'd expect.

The game is a clay product first. Etcheverry's forehand is an elite shot that shouldn't be too dependent on the conditions, the heavy weapon he hits behind to grind opponents off the baseline. Due to his height, the serve still has room for improvement, and part of his 2023 success was getting more flat power out of it instead of the angles and spins that work best on clay. He's a marathon man — durable in five-setters, more vulnerable when the surface speeds up.

The breakthrough was 2023. He reached his first two ATP Tour finals on clay — the Chile Open in Santiago, where he lost to Nicolás Jarry, and Houston, falling to Frances Tiafoe. Then came Paris: he advanced past Alex de Minaur, Borna Ćorić and Yoshihito Nishioka to reach the French Open quarterfinals as the only unseeded man left, before falling to Alexander Zverev. He closed 2023 ranked No. 30 and peaked at No. 27 in February 2024.

The current beat is a second wind. At the 2026 Miami Open he reached the fourth round of a Masters 1000 for the first time, and also made the last 16 at Monte-Carlo. At Madrid he hit a career-high No. 26 and became the South American No. 1 on 4 May 2026, then cracked the top 25 on 18 May. He's now Latin America's highest-ranked man.
