Taylor Fritz About

The serve-forehand Californian who broke America's Slam-final drought

Taylor Fritz was bred for this. The Rancho Santa Fe, California native came up through tennis royalty — his mother, Kathy May, was a top-10 WTA player and his father, Guy, a longtime coach. Fritz finished 2015 as the ITF junior world No. 1, turned pro at 17, and stacked Challenger titles in Sacramento and Fairfield in 2016 to crack the top 100. He reached his first ATP final at Memphis as an 18-year-old wild card, then spent the next several seasons converting raw potential into a methodical top-10 climb.

At 6-foot-5, Fritz is a first-strike hard-court player built on a serve that routinely clears 130 mph and a flat, heavy forehand he uses to dictate from the center of the court. The backhand is the steadier wing; the movement and defense have always lagged the firepower, which is why his best surfaces are the quick ones. On a fast hard court he can hold serve for entire sets and bully shorter rallies — the template that made him one of the tour's most reliable big-match servers.

The signature breakthrough came at Indian Wells in 2022, his first Masters 1000 title, beating Rafael Nadal in the final. He's since become a fixture at the ATP Finals and the spearhead of American tennis, trading top wins and losses with peers like Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton. The defining result was the 2024 US Open, where he became the first American man to reach a Grand Slam singles final since Andy Roddick in 2009 — falling to Jannik Sinner, the wall he and Carlos Alcaraz keep running into.

Now ranked No. 9, Fritz remains the American No. 1 and a perennial threat through the grass and hard-court swings, with Wimbledon and the US Open his clearest paths back to a second Slam final.
