Stefanos Tsitsipas About

The one-handed standard-bearer, grinding back from outside the top 80

Stefanos Tsitsipas is the most decorated player Greece has ever produced — the country's first top-100 entrant, first Slam finalist, and the figure who single-handedly dragged Greek tennis onto the global map. Born in Athens in August 1998 to a tennis family — his mother a former Soviet WTA pro, his father his lifelong coach — he turned pro in 2016, climbed through the Challenger circuit, and announced himself by winning the 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan. By August 2021 he had reached a career-high World No. 3.

The calling card is the one-handed backhand, played with full commitment in an era that has all but abandoned the shot, paired with a heavy, first-strike forehand and an aggressive court-positioning game built to step in and dictate. At his best he's a problem on every surface, but clay is home — the topspin, the patience, and the willingness to construct points reward him most on the dirt. The serve and forehand carry the offense; the backhand wing and second-serve return have long been the pressure points top opponents probe.

The peak years stacked deep runs everywhere: a 2019 ATP Finals title, two Roland-Garros finals (2021, 2024), and an Australian Open final in 2023, plus eight career-best Masters 1000 crowns including multiple titles at the Monte Carlo Masters. His rivalries with Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, and the younger wave led by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner defined his prime-era ceiling — and, increasingly, his struggle to break through it.

The current beat is a reset. Ranked 84th, Tsitsipas is well off his peak and hunting form on the surfaces that built him, with the clay swing through the Italian Open and French Open the natural proving ground for a climb back up.
