Mattia Bellucci About

The Busto Arsizio southpaw who built top-70 on patient point construction

Mattia Bellucci is a left-hander from Busto Arsizio, the next name in Italy's deep pipeline behind Sinner and Musetti. He was introduced to tennis by his father and first coach, Fabrizio Bellucci, at age four, and turned professional in 2018. The climb was slow and lower-tier: he won two ATP Challenger titles at the 2022 Saint-Tropez Open and Vilnius Open, becoming the youngest Italian to win Challenger titles in back-to-back weeks since 19-year-old Stefano Pescosolido in 1991.

At 1.75m, he isn't built to overpower anyone. His left-handed game and two-handed backhand lean on precision and rhythm — more clever than physical. He's a patient point-constructor who manipulates angles off the lefty forehand rather than hitting through the court, and the serve does enough to keep him in control: he averages roughly 6 aces per match over his career. Indoor hard is where it all clicks — the surface that rewards his timing over raw pace.

The defining stretch came early in 2025 at the Rotterdam Open. Entering as a qualifier, Bellucci beat second seed Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 for his first top-10 win, then upset sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas before falling to Alex de Minaur in the semifinals. It was his first ATP semifinal, and it propelled him from outside the top 90. His best major run followed at Wimbledon, where he reached the third round, and he peaked at a career-high world No. 63 in July 2025. Earlier majors had given him his first taste of the level: he earned maiden wins at both a Grand Slam and a Masters 1000 in 2024.

Now 24, Bellucci is consolidating rather than surging. He sits at No. 78 with 734 points, his form a scattered run of wins and losses. The Rotterdam points that fueled the 2025 jump are the ones he's defending — the gap between that breakthrough fortnight and the weekly grind is the live question on his sheet heading into the European hard and clay swing.
