Elvina Kalieva About

The Brooklyn grinder who waited four years for a tour-level win

Elvina Kalieva was born in Brooklyn on July 27, 2003, of Uzbek descent, and came up a Staten Island junior before the family moved to Delray Beach when she was 12. She skipped the college route more Americans now take, playing her first professional match in 2017 and spending most of a decade on the ITF circuit. Her first Flushing Meadows appearance came in 2021 as a mixed-doubles wild card with Bruno Kuzuhara, the fortnight she finished girls' doubles runner-up. Her older brother, Arthur Kaliyev, plays in the NHL.

The game is built on the return, not the serve. She has won 42.5 percent of return points in 2026 while holding only 56.7 percent of her service games, and a winners-to-unforced ratio of 0.67 confirms the method: she does not out-hit people, she extends rallies until the error comes. Deciders follow, with three of her four tour-level wins this season going the distance.

Her tour debut came as a wild card at Indian Wells in 2022, where she took Ekaterina Alexandrova to a third-set tiebreak, and she cracked the Top 200 that October at 19, though the ranking slid out of the Top 300 by 2024. The rebuild is all 2026: a W100 San Diego title in January, biggest of her three ITF titles; a first tour-level win over Dalma Galfi at the Miami Open in March, four years after that debut; and a first WTA semifinal at the Memphis Classic in July, over Zeynep Sonmez and Peyton Stearns, before eventual champion Kristina Liutova ended it.

As of September 2026 she stands at WTA No. 115, a career high first reached on August 25 and 133 places better than a year earlier. Three qualifying wins delivered a US Open main-draw debut in her own city, ended by a near-three-hour loss to Lanlana Tararudee. The next marker is arithmetic: direct entry to majors begins at No. 104.
