Dayana Yastremska arrived early and never softened her game to fit in. Her tennis journey began at five years old, training as a junior in Istanbul, Turkey. The juniors flagged her fast: she made her only junior Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon, finishing runner-up to Anastasia Potapova, then reached a career-high junior ranking of No. 6 in the world. The senior breakthrough came quickly — she made her debut in the top 100 and won two titles when she was 18 years old, including her first at the Hong Kong Open in 2018.
The game is built on flat, first-strike ballstriking — she takes time away from everyone across the net and dictates from the baseline rather than waiting for an opening. The serve is a weapon; the return swings for outright winners. It's high-variance tennis: when the timing lands she runs through top-10 names, and the early résumé proves it. In 2019 she won the Internationaux de Strasbourg, upsetting Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals and beating Caroline Garcia in a third-set tiebreak for the title.
That 2019 season carried her up the board — a rise from No. 58 at the start of the year to No. 22 by the end — and she peaked at world No. 21 in January 2020. The defining run came later, after a ranking collapse and a doping suspension that bottomed her out. In 2024 she enjoyed a fairytale run to her first Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open as a qualifier, including a defeat of No. 7 Marketa Vondrousova and two-time major champion Azarenka. Ranked No. 93 at the time, she became the lowest-ranked player in 40 years to reach the women's singles semifinals at the Australian Open.
The current beat is a steadying climb back toward that ceiling. She reached a WTA 500 final in 2025 at the Linz Open, and now sits just outside the top 48, hunting the fourth tour title that's eluded her since the early prodigy years.
