Anna Kalinskaya About

The qualifier who made Dubai her launchpad — and finally cracked clay

Anna Kalinskaya is the Moscow-born ball-striker who turned a decade of injury-stalled grinding into a top-15 career on the back of one February. She came up the junior ranks — she won the girls' doubles title at the 2016 Australian Open alongside Tereza Mihalíková, after reaching the 2015 French Open girls' singles final and the 2015 US Open girls' doubles final with compatriot Anastasia Potapova — but the senior climb dragged. She first broke into the top 100 in 2019 with a quarterfinal run at Tashkent and a maiden top-10 win over Sloane Stephens at the US Open, then reached a career high of No. 11 on 28 October 2024.

The game is flat, early, and built for hard courts. An aggressive baseliner, she strikes both wings cleanly and flat, taking the ball early to rush opponents and shorten rallies, with a two-handed backhand that's a reliable point-ending shot. The trade-off is the one that haunts every flat hitter: margin. When the timing wavers the errors pile up fast, and the body has betrayed her repeatedly — a forearm injury at Wimbledon, retirements in Adelaide and elsewhere.

The defining week came as a qualifier at the 2026 Dubai Championships' 2024 edition. She beat three former Grand Slam champions — Jeļena Ostapenko, then Coco Gauff for her first top-5 win, then world No. 1 Iga Świątek in the semis — becoming only the second qualifier to reach a WTA 1000 final since 2022. She fell to Jasmine Paolini in three, the match slipping away after she had served for the title leading 5-4 in the decider. Weeks earlier she'd made her first major quarterfinal in Melbourne; that June she ran to a second 2024 final in Berlin, falling to Jessica Pegula.

The current beat: at 20 in the world, Kalinskaya has finally answered the clay question. Her best major results now include the quarterfinals at both the 2024 Australian Open and the 2026 French Open — a surface that long held only a sliver of her ranking points. The maiden tour title remains the missing piece.
