Alex De Minaur About

The Demon: Sydney's speed merchant who made the top 10 his home

Alex De Minaur was born in Sydney in 1999 to a Uruguayan father and a Spanish mother, and spent much of his childhood in Alicante on Spain's east coast before tying his career to Australia. He turned pro in 2015, claimed ATP Newcomer of the Year in 2018, and by that October had displaced Nick Kyrgios as the country's top-ranked man — a position he has never relinquished. The "Demon" tag, a riff on his surname, suits a player who treats every point as a footrace.

Style is the whole story. De Minaur is the tour's premier counterpuncher: among the fastest movers in the game, he turns defense into offense by retrieving balls that should be winners and redirecting them with flat, early-struck groundstrokes. The serve is the long-standing knock — he gives up size and free points against the Sinner and Zverev tier — but the return, the court coverage, and the refusal to miss make him a nightmare for anyone short of the elite.

The career arc is steady accumulation rather than a single breakout. He has won multiple ATP titles, anchored Australia's Davis Cup and United Cup campaigns, and pushed into the second week at every major. His Grand Slam ceiling has been the quarterfinals — he reached the last eight at Wimbledon and the US Open, where the gap to the very top has shown up as the wall he hasn't yet cleared, often against Alcaraz or Sinner.

Now ranked No. 6, De Minaur sits where his ceiling and floor have settled — a fixture in the top tier chasing the breakthrough that turns quarterfinals into finals. The serve remains the swing variable; the legs, as ever, are not in doubt.
