Top seed Alexander Zverev reached the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals after he beat Alexander Bublik in three sets, with both the opener and the decider going to tiebreaks. Zverev converted only one of six break points. He got through by taking the first-set tiebreak 8-6 and the deciding-set tiebreak 7-1. The match was mostly decided on serve. There were three breaks across 34 games, and Zverev finished with fewer games, 16 to 18, but more points, 118 to 106. Neither player broke in the first set. In the second, Bublik, the 19th seed and ATP No. 22, broke in game 5 for a 3-2 lead. It was the set's only break. He saved all four break points he faced, despite serving six double faults in that set. The third set began with a break each. Bublik broke in the opening game, and Zverev broke back right away for 1-1. Both then held through to a tiebreak, which Zverev won by six points. Bublik won just 42 percent of his second-serve points and finished with eight double faults to go with his 20 aces. Zverev made 23 unforced errors to Bublik's 36. This was Zverev's second straight three-set match in Shanghai, after his win over Quentin Halys. He next faces Alex de Minaur, ranked ATP No. 9.
