The third set opened with a break for 1-0 and closed with another in game 6 for 6-0, Virtanen's first-serve points won collapsing to 29 percent from 74 a set earlier. The first two sets stopped mattering. From there Rublev held 23 of his 25 service games to Virtanen's 18 and won seven return games to two, the flat, early forehand that is his whole method finally landing in court rather than a foot beyond it. Each man saved a match point in the deciding tiebreak, and at 3 hours 41 minutes the 23rd seed comes through the opening round at the US Open.
